The UNbrella - KDays Design Competition Winner
2025
Team: AdaMatium (Adam Groshong & Mathew Hale)
The UNbrella was designed for the 2025 KDays Design Competition, an annual event hosted by Explore Edmonton in partnership with MADE (Media Architecture Design Edmonton). This year's theme, "Make It Rain," challenged designers to create an innovative misting structure to enhance the fairground experience.
Our concept, the UNbrella, playfully reimagines the purpose of an umbrella. Instead of shielding people from the rain, this 12-foot-tall installation invites them to step under its canopy and embrace the cooling mist. The design provides an engaging and refreshing escape from the summer heat, turning an everyday object into a fun, interactive experience.
Winning this competition highlights my passion for blending design, functionality, and public interaction. The UNbrella was intended to featured on the KDays fairgrounds, offering festival-goers a refreshing break while showcasing Edmonton’s dynamic design community. Unfortunatley, due to budget cut backs, the UNbrella will not be built in 2025.
